Friday on the Fritz

So my musical tastes range far and wide. I think Steve Taylor is/was a lyrical genius. If you're a Newsboys fan, you've heard a LOT of his lyrics sung by Peter Furler. If you're partial to Steve doing his own stuff, enjoy:

This video of "On The Fritz" is highly artistic and pretty heavy. For the unititiated, let me just tell you that the song tells the story of a man (anyone, really) who has gained notoriety in ministry, but whose heart is tainted and in need of healing and rescue.

Anybody recognize Jimmy Abegg in this vid? :)

you probably heard that Steve Taylor is making the Blue Like Jazz movie?? Donald Miller's blog I think has some interviews abd stuff if you hadn't seen them yet.

wow, just watched 'on the fritz.' Heavy like you said. Sad to say, but it looks like the monkey on his back won out in the end...

btw, interesting factoid: when I was 16 I used to work with the guy who played the photographer at 1:36. I was apprenticing at a studio on Cape Cod where he was working. Actually - you'll like this Blaine - he and the guy we both worked for, are friends of none other than Phil Keaggy. Really! When the Christian music industry began moving to Franklin TN, Ben (the photographer in the video) moved there too. He's photographed many many Christian musicians, including all those gorgeous shots of Rich Mullins at that cool old church.

Anyway, that was a fun surprise to see him in the video with his old film Leica. I learned a lot from him. (Actually, he got me into the Zone system, now that I think of it) It makes sense that he's in a Steve Taylor video since he is writing the script (and I presume filming?) Blue Like Jazz with Steve Taylor.

Also, you might like to know: the photographer we both worked for was named Bill Clarke. He's since died of cancer but way back in the day, he and Phil Keaggy lived in some Christian community together in (I think) upstate NY. Bill wrote a poem, "Ryan's Song" that Phil eventually put to music. It was about a baby that Phil and his wife had lost. I forget what album it was on...maybe "Emerging" (back when "emerging" meant something else to Christians haha. Anyway, that was neat for me to know because as a teen I really looked up to Phil and to actually meet a friend of his and then work for him was very cool.

Anyway, there you go. Sorry for the long comment..........

Chris WOW! Those are some amazingly cool connections! haha whoda thunk I'd post a bizarre music video from Steve Taylor and a friend of mine from Vermont that I've never met in person would see somebody in the vid that he worked with twenty years ago :D. That's cool stuff. I love it.

And hey, I'm thankful to hear about the Zone system. I love to photograph, but any technical knowledge I have has come from trial and error and self-teaching. I think I would really benefit from working WITH someone who is more of an "expert" or actually getting some instruction. Now I'm gonna cruise the Web and learn about the Zone. Thanks!

I'm honestly not sure how the zone system would work with digital photography. But if you are old school *read: film* then it can work great. Its a b&w thing really. And it works best with removable film backs (like in a medium format camera. Those are really cheap these days as you might imagine). Ansel Adams is (of course) the go-to guy on Zone, and I actually studied Fred Picker's book, the title of which i forget....

Chris-I have one of Adam's books at home on his photography basics - almost picked it up two days ago to start reading it. From what I read, there are now opportunities for using the Zone system with DSLRs now due to advancements digital capabilities. Anyway, I hope I can learn something!
